"This year, I had the title, even before I had a clear direction for my show.
The name just popped into my consciousness one day, perhaps because I was getting into poetry,
or maybe because letters and text and all things alphabet are such a part of my work as a painter.
Besides imagery, every painting I make always includes words and letters, for compositional reasons,
or titling or describing or labeling, or pointing out, or just for fun.
Besides that, the remembrance of Alphabet Soup-- Vegetarian Vegetable as it was called back in
the day--also brings up childhood, and the intrigue of the random appearance of words spelled
out in little individual pasta letters in every spoonful, a game played before that soupy
vocabulary made its way to my mouth, and in turn, my gullet. It wouldn't be a stretch to
think that I coined a few words along the way as well. Inspiration and innovation!
All these language references then lead me to remember those erudite English and French
gentlemen of the 14th and 15th century who prided themselves with their cleverly creative
names attributed to groups of animals, birds, and insects. Originally in the milieu of
hunting, these terms of venery expanded into every Kingdom. Dreaming up oftentimes-outlandish
names for various collectives, beestys and fowlys, what a hoot they must have had outdoing one
another with their linguistic inventions. This had to be word play and banter at its best, and
definitely more art than science.
My exhibit, Alphabet Soup, is therefore my appreciative concoction, a little of everything
thrown into the pot, thanking language, creativity and all fascinating living creatures for
adding such delicious richness to our world."
